The fir basalm of the balsam fir, emblem of North America

Balsam fir or Abies balsamea from its scientific name, is a species of fir in the pinaceae family. This one is native to North America and can reach 15 to 20 m in height while having a trunk of more than 60 cm in diameter. Generally pyramidal in shape, the balsam fir has a longevity of 70 to 150 years. It is embellished with many wooden cones of 5 to 10 cm, standing proudly on its twigs. The latter ripen in autumn and sublimate the many flat and non-prickly needles present on its branches. These are very fragrant and thus perfume the habitats of North Americans at Christmas time. Its bark is smooth, with a grayish color. To grow properly, this conifer needs good sunlight. It is therefore rather located on the edge of the forest or in gaps. It is particularly present in the Canadian province of Quebec and appreciates the cold climate and the constantly humid soil of this region. In addition to its use as a windbreak, balsam fir is very famous for its gum, especially in the optical and perfume sectors. Likewise, note that this large pyramidal tree is also widely used by perfumers. Its scent is extracted with volatile solvents from its twigs or needles. This makes it possible to obtain fir basalm, a typically French word that is called in other countries the absolute of pine balsam. Generally speaking, fir basalm is found in men's fragrances and gives them a woody aromatic tone. Overall, it is associated with other of its congeners such as cedar, cypress or guaiac wood.

Many men's fragrances contain it. This is notably the case of Bottega Veneta pour Homme, Cacharel pour Homme, Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche or Feeling Man by Jil Sander. However, fir basalm is also included in the Fille en Aiguilles juice, a unisex fragrance by Serge Lutens, as well as in the feminine Aqua Allegoria Winter Délice by Guerlain.
